Since its inception in 2003, Vintage Illinois has become a treasured staple for locals and out-of-towners alike. It’s a unique opportunity for attendees to sample their way through a roster of distinctive vintners, enjoy live music, and plan an event-filled getaway. 

The festival takes place on Saturday, September 21st (11 AM – 6 PM) and Sunday, September 22nd (Noon – 5 PM). During the weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to shop local businesses and Canal Market vendors, as well as spoil your taste buds with bites from local restaurants and event food trucks.

3. Book a River Cruise or Trolley Tour

Drink in the scenic canyons of Starved Rock State Park and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Illinois River aboard the Eagle I. 5. Explore Starved Rock State Park

The #1 attraction in Illinois? Count us in! With 13 miles of trails to traverse, seasonal waterfalls, and idyllic scenery (including 18 canyons), Starved Rock State Park is a must-see. Sprawled along the Illinois River, you can also partake in boating, fishing, or camping. The park was named a National Historic Landmark In 1966 and is the perfect place to get in touch with nature and create lasting memories.

We have three locations at the Illinois State Fair! The Illinois Wine Experience is open daily in the Artisan Building. Your $10 entry fee provides five tasting tickets and a complimentary wine tumbler Additional tasting tickets are available for purchase, enabling you to sample award-winning wines for all taste preferences (White, Red, Rosé, dry, sweet, semi-sweet). Cool off and relax with the winemakers while you sample, sip and stock up for home (purchase a case or more and your wine gets a ride to your vehicle on the fairgrounds).

The state’s largest – and most highly anticipated – Illinois wine festival is returning to North Utica with more delectable wines and culinary delights than ever before. 

Since its inception, Vintage Illinois has become a treasured staple for locals and out-of-towners alike. It’s a unique opportunity for attendees to sample their way through a roster of distinctive vintners, enjoy live music, and plan an event-filled getaway.

The Illinois Product Farmers Market is one of the best ways to spend your Thursdays, from May to September. From finding some healthy, local produce to homemade products & treats, while enjoying some Illinois Wine, there's something for everyone.

Plus, we will have wine slushies available! Live music starts at 5 o'clock and a food truck every week - You can stock up on your groceries and restock your wine cabinet while you're at it. 

The Department of Agriculture has created a healthy, local and fun way to do your grocery shopping so come out and join us at the Shed Building located on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Every Thursday @ 3:30 pm - 7, starting May 16th - September 26th. Grapes are the highest value fruit crop in the U.S., and represent 36% of the value of non-citrus fruit crops. According to the 2019 Illinois Wine Economic Impact Report wineries made 1.17 million gallons of wine has a $5.7 Billion total impact for the state of Illinois.

At the Annual Illinois Awards banquet, wine industry members enjoyed a five course meal paired with Award-winning Illinois Wine. 

Awards were presented for the following.

The Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance (IGGVA) recently celebrated its outstanding members at their annual awards ceremony. Here are the highlights:

Enologist of the Year: Matt Schulte of Spirit Knob Winery has garnered an impressive 12 bronze, 23 silver, 7 gold, and a remarkable 8 double gold medals since 2019. His dedication to quality and innovation has also secured him three, including two this year alone, of the prestigious Illinois Governor's Cup Awards.

Viticulturist of the Year: Mike and Laura Wilke of Wilke Vineyard exemplify excellence. Starting with just 100 vines, their meticulous care has transformed the vineyard into a model of efficiency and productivity. They are lifelong learners, constantly seeking new knowledge to improve their craft and readily share it with others. Their exceptional grapes consistently produce outstanding wines.

Emerging Leader: Hanna Wichmann of Wichmann Vineyards has revitalized her vineyard and crafted exceptional wines. Beyond her grapes and bottles, she serves as the chairperson of the Shawnee Hills Wine Grape Association, preserving traditions and promoting the region's wines.

Friend of the Industry: Rickey Lee Lamb is a tireless advocate for Illinois wines. From volunteering at conferences to promoting the industry to officials, his dedication and infectious enthusiasm are invaluable.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Tina Simmermaker of West of Wise Winery has been instrumental in the success of both her winery and the IGGVA. As secretary/treasurer, she ensured financial stability, developed new financial record systems, and expertly managed personnel matters. Her dedication leaves an enduring legacy.

The state's annual Illinois Product Expo in Springfield is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts. Here, visitors can discover and sample a wide variety of locally produced food and wines, all while supporting small businesses and the state's economy.

Illinois Wine: Spotlight in California

Illinois Wine featured at Unified

Illinois Wine participated for the second time in the regional pouring of wines paired with bites of hors d’oeuvres at Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California. This is an exclusive industry invite - and (in our opinion) it shows industry confidence in the quality of wines produced in Illinois! Every January since 1995, the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium trade show is home to over 650 suppliers to the wine and grape industry. With nearly 14,000 industry professionals attending and 750 booths, the Symposium is the largest wine & grape industry conference and trade show of its kind in North America.

Illinois team members participating in this event were IGGVA Executive Director Lisa Ellis, Rickey Lamb and Britt White and Eric White from Galena Cellars. Award-winning wines from Galena Cellars, Spirit Knob Winery and Illinois Sparkling Co were poured at the event. 

Illinois a top 5 float in the Rose Parade

For millions of people around the world, the Rose Parade is a New Year’s Day tradition. The Enjoy Illinois float featuring the Blue Brothers was voted a top 5 float in the Rose Parade by the Pasadena-Star News. Obviously, they have excellent taster. Did you miss the Rose parade? Five Illinois wineries won awards in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

A big congratulations to the Illinois wineries that won this year: Bishops Hill, Feather Hills Vineyard & Winery, Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery, Kite Hill Vineyards, and The Holotype Wine Co. Located in the heart of the state, the Springfield, Illinois area is known for being the home to Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The Central region is also home to a variety of wineries and vineyards, each with its own distinct charm.

Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant is one of the must-visit destinations in the Central region. With its combination of a winery, restaurant, and tasting room, Cooper's Hawk offers a complete wine experience. The winery produces a wide range of varietals, from rich reds to crisp whites. Danenberger Family Vineyards is an award-winning winery, restaurant & has epic live music. The winemaker’s family has farmed this land for over 100 years. For the last 10 years the winemaker, Susan Sullivan Danenberger, has approached winemaking as pieces of art; painting with different flavors and structures to arrive at something layered but cohesive. Danenberger is known for their large music stage and has upcoming shows like dueling pianos, Metallica tribute band, Pink Floyd tribute band, and Ladies night out with Tiffany.

If you're looking for a more intimate and off-the-beaten-path experience, West of Wise Winery is the place to go. Located in Petersburg, Illinois, this boutique winery specializes in small-batch wines made from locally Illinois grown grapes. Visitors can relax on the outdoor patio, savor a glass of wine, and take in the tranquility of the surroundings. 

Hill Prairie Winery is another hidden gem that should not be missed. This family-owned winery is located in Oakford and offers a rustic and charming atmosphere. Hill Prairie is known for its award-winning wines and is located in a 100 year old barn with a warm ambiance that welcomes you with friends and drink. Surrounding the barn is a large pavilion and outdoor seating area for enjoying warm weather and great bands in the summer. Plus, visitors can enjoy year round live entertainment at Hill Prairie.

Vintage Illinois Wine Festival: Held in Utica September 21-22, get ready to sip, savor, and uncork the fun at this year’s Vintage Illinois Weekend as we celebrate our 21st anniversary of this wine festival! The state’s largest – and most highly anticipated – Illinois wine festival is returning to North Utica with more delectable wines and culinary delights than ever before! Tickets on sale now!

Thanksgiving food and Illinois wine pairings

1. Sparkling Wine and Charcuterie: Sparkling wines pair perfectly with cured meats, cheeses, and pickled vegetables. Plus, you can add sparkling wine to orange juice for that perfect holiday morning Mimosa. This pairing recommendation is inspired by Vera. She likes to pair Massbach Ridge Winery’s Staccato White with her charcuterie board at Thanksgiving.

2. Vignoles and Turkey: Vignoles is a great choice to pair with turkey, as its bright acidity pairs well with the savory flavors of the bird. This pairing recommendation is from Lora. She loves Pheasant Hollow’s Vignoles and thinks it also pairs well with her Thanksgiving side dishes.

3. Chambourcin and Stuffing: Chambourcin has a medium body and earthy, fruity flavors that pair well with the herbs and spices in a Thanksgiving stuffing. This pairing recommendation is from Jacob. He likes to serve Sable Creek Winery’s Chambourcin wine with his special mushroom stuffing.

4. Norton and Roasted Vegetables: A dry red Norton, is the perfect wine to pair with roasted vegetables like Brussels sprouts, carrots, and potatoes. This pairing is from Kim. She loves the balance of the medium-bodied Starview Norton with herb roasted veggies in a Norton wine reduction sauce.

5. Rosé and Cranberry Sauce: Rosés are fruity and light-bodied wines that pair perfectly with the tartness of your Thanksgiving cranberry sauce. Lori pairs Kite Hill’s Fly Away Rosé with Cranberry sauce and also pours this with Thanksgiving appetizers.

Tips for serving and enjoying Illinois wine

1. Make sure to serve the wine in the right glass. Different types of wine should be served in different types of glasses to help enhance the flavor and aroma.

2. Give the wine time to breathe. Allow the wine to sit and open up for a few minutes prior to serving. Swirl it around in your glass before tasting, and consider aerating your reds to open them up right away.

3. Use the right temperature. Different wines require different serving temperatures. Generally, white wines should be served cooler than reds. Some people like to use the “20/20 method:” Take your whites OUT of the refrigerator for 20 minutes before serving, and pop your red wines IN the refrigerator for 20 minutes before serving.

5. Enjoy the experience. Take time to savor the flavors and aromas of the wine and appreciate the unique characteristics that each wine has to offer.

Warm up fall with red wine

Illinois wine grows grapes that are unique to our Midwest weather. Here are three red wine varietals that are perfect for warming up this fall. Buy them by the bottle or the case at local Illinois wineries to enjoy around crackling fires.

Chambourcin

A late-ripening, dark blue-black grape that can produce a highly rated red wine with a reasonably full, slightly herbaceous flavor and aroma. 

Norton

Sometimes called Cynthiana, the Norton grape produces a dark, inky red wine with flavors of plums and cherries. 

Cabernet Franc

The parent grape of both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is Cabernet Franc. Complex reds result, with aromas of bright berry with black and bell pepper.

Attend the Vintage Illinois Wine Festival September 16-17

One of the highlights of Illinois Wine Month is the Vintage Illinois Wine Festival, a two-day event that showcases the best wines from around the state. This annual festival, held in the heart of Illinois, brings together wine lovers, local winemakers, and vineyard owners to celebrate the beauty and craftsmanship of both white and red wines.

The festival takes place in downtown Utica, Illinois and is a short walk from local restaurants and shops. As you stroll through the festival grounds, you'll have the opportunity to visit various winery booths, each offering a selection of their finest wines. The winemakers and vineyard owners are often present, eager to share their knowledge and passion for winemaking with festival attendees.

In addition to wine tasting, the Vintage Illinois Wine Festival also offers a range of live music to enhance your experience. Bands on Saturday, September 16 include: Dan Hubbard Duo, Steve Sharp Band, Jack Dupp and the Empty Bottles. On September 17 live music continues with performances by Mr. Falcon, Radium City Rebels and the Aaron Kelly Duo.
