Highlights of the 2016 Conference and Winter Wine Festival

The 2016 Conference was an amazing experience!  Thanks to all who could join us at the conference and the Winter Wine Festival!  For pictures from the 2016 Conference, and anything else related to the the Illinois grape and wine industry, check us out on Facebook.

We kicked off the event this year with a very special tasting of Riedel glassware, where attendees will had the opportunity to experience the sensory attributes of different styles of wine in varying glass types. We also experienced how glassware can impact the perceived value of our products.  We tasted and evaluated both traditional California varietals as well as Illinois wines in several different glass styles.  Those in attendance got to keep the glasses, and try them out on their own wines after the conference.

One of the highlights of the conference education sessions was our Keynote Presentation on Tidal Bay, an up-and-coming wine region in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Gillian Mainguy and Ben Swetnam represented the region, and detailed the unique strategy they employ to assist with marketing their region and its member wineries.

Dr. Bruce Bordelon of Purdue University joined us to review strategies for vineyard recovery following injury, and problem several of our vineyards are working through since the extreme winter of 2013-2014, and also discussed reliable cultivars for replanting.

Ethan Joseph of Shelburne Vineyards in Vermont gave a thorough discussion of wine processing methods for dry red and white wines from hybrid grapes.  He also poured some of his award-winning wines to demonstrate how the processing methods impact wine quality.

Becky McRoberts and Crystal Eustice-Miller, of Michigan State University, presented the results from recent studies on tasting room traffic, wine customer demographics, and the perception of value and tasting room sales.

We had a great trade show this year too!  While there is never enough time to visit all the vendors, we ask that you take a second and consider these fine folks before making any future purchasing decision.  If you speak with them in the future, please let them know how much you appreciate their participation in our conference!

We also had another great Winter Wine Festival, with 15 wineries pouring their best for the public.  Over 700 attended this year’s festival, and it seems to get bigger and bigger every year!  The Annual Awards Banquet capped off the weekend by serving a 8-course meal paired with the top award winners from the 2015 Illinois State Fair Wine Competition.  We also presented the following awards:

Viticulturist of the Year: Brett Morrison, StarView Vineyards

Enologist of the Year:  Matt Schulte, Spirit Knob Winery

Friend of the Industry: Susanne Bullock, August Hill Winery

Industry Achievement: Martha Rittmueller, Lavender Crest Winery
